Update for Joshua

March 2, 2010

Today we saw the Center for Prenatal Development and received no new news which is a definite good thing in our situation.  He has some fluid collecting in his chest and abdomen (known as ascites) which they are keeping an eye on but no significant changes in the amount from last week.  More fluid would mean he has developed hydrops which is very bad.  So far so good on that front.  We also had an appointment at UNM Hospital for a Fetal MRI of which I have attached a couple of images from.  The Pediatric Radiologist will review the images and send over the images and report to our specialist by wednesday afternoon.  From there we will hear the news on Joshua’s Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) and be able to develop some kind of birth and treatment plan.  There are a lot of unknowns still and we are in the “data collecting” phase.

We also have an appointment with the Pediatric Cardiologist on wednesday to find out the severity of the Congenital Heart Defect and develop some kind of plan around that.  The specialists aren’t too concerned with the heart at this point but have told us that it will require surgery at some point.  This doctor appointment will tell us when he will have to have the surgery.

We have another appointment on thursday to see the Neonatologist (the doctor in charge of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or NICU) to review the findings and go over the exact treatment after the heart surgery.  These last 2 appointments, although important, are not the priority as they are with Presbyterian Hospital and they won’t be delivering Joshua anyway.  They just are not capable in dealing with the CDH.

Anyway, keep praying for us as we need all the prayer we can get right now.  Thanks for all the support and I will update the blog once I find out more.

Thank you for all the detais. I will pass on the info to Mom2Mom so we can pray specifically for him. We love you!

  3. What amazing images of your little one! I’m so sorry you and your family are going through this but it looks like you have a strong little man. My prayers are with you and little Joshua. That’s great news that he doesn’t have Hydrops. A dear friend of mine lost her little girl to that recently.

We serve a great God and may His loving care surround all of you as you search for answers. Looking forward to reading updates!

It sounds like you have a great team of Doctors there working with you and Joshua. NICU doctors are the best. I am so glad to hear that they are collecting data and not jumping to prenatal surgery.
Joshua’s pictures are precious. He looks like a fighter!! Praying that our God will direct you and bring just the right people into you lives.

Hey Kelli. My dear woman, my heart is breaking for you and for your family’s journey right now. Words are inadequate for they never ever explain away the pain or confusion and they so rarely make sense of situations like this. I am praying for all of you, especially Joshua. I don’t know any more than you have posted here, but I do know that God is faithful. You are not, and Joshua is not and never will any of you be, alone. If its okay with you, I’m planning to take your story to my fellow staff members at a church here in Colorado and asking them to pray with us corporately at our Monday staff prayer time. I am praying for you all as well. Love to you and your family.
